In The Secret Lives of Insects: Macro Photo Contest, we invite photographers to reveal the hidden details and remarkable moments that often go unnoticed by the human eye.
From butterflies, dragonflies, bees, ants, beetles, mantises, spiders, and other tiny creatures to their interactions with flowers, plants, and each other, this contest celebrates the incredible diversity of the miniature world around us.
Whether your image captures dramatic behavior, stunning macro details, vibrant colors, unusual textures, or artistic compositions, show us the fascinating lives of insects through your lens.
Both macro and close-up photography are welcome. Color or black & white images may be submitted, as long as insects or small arthropods remain the primary subject of the photograph.

on TopPhotoAwards in 2026 are not eligible for this contest and cannot be submitted again.
What We’re Looking For
Insect life — butterflies, bees, dragonflies, beetles, ants, mantises, spiders, and other tiny creatures
Macro & close-up detail — sharp focus that reveals textures, eyes, wings, patterns, and structures
Natural behavior — feeding, pollinating, hunting, flying, mating, nesting, or interaction with the environment
Creative composition — thoughtful framing, perspective, depth of field, and visual impact
Light & atmosphere — natural or controlled lighting that enhances mood and detail
Respect for nature — images that celebrate living subjects without causing harm or distress
